That seems a pretty silly question to ask, seeing as how you're already here looking for one! But just in case you aren't sure, let's review why you should - and should NOT - buy a Pug.
Pugs are SUPPOSED TO BE:
- great little dogs weighing 14 to 18 pounds ( kg)
- flat-faced
- cobby, thick in the body
- square in proportion
- happy-go-lucky
- fawn or black in color
Pugs also ARE:
- noisy - snoring, belching and farting
- nosey - always putting their noses into everything
- shedding - ALWAYS
- heat intolerant - a life-threatening problem
- clinging cuddlers - need to be with people
- stubborn - a little. spoiled sometimes too
Why say it that way? That Pugs are "supposed" to be those things? Because a poorly bred Pug, one who has a breeder that doesn't pay attention to their breeding program, is often NONE of those things. Breeders who aren't serious about the breed don't pay attention to the personality of both parents, they don't socialize their puppies. These are breeders you'll want to try to avoid purchasing a puppy from.
So what are Pugs GOOD for?
- snuggling and cuddling
- shedding (if you like to knit dog hair)
- companionship
- obedience
- agility (some of them)
Pugs are NOT GOOD for:
- jogging
- protection
- going to the beach
- black clothes (and fawn Pugs - reversed for tan clothes with black Pugs)
Now that you're sure you want a dog that sheds pretty much all the time, loves to cuddle to the point of being underfoot, makes pretty loud noises, can't go jogging with you, has to live indoors, passes gas often (and it stinks!) and makes you laugh, then you're well suited to the Pug breed.
Let's look for breeders then.
